Project Overview

GEM Joinery, in collaboration with Gem Construction, was awarded the contract for the specialist fit-out of the main auditorium at the Convention Centre Dublin (CCD) — a landmark civic project located in the heart of Dublin’s Docklands and part of the Spencer Dock regeneration.

Working under the design direction of Kevin Roche John Dinkeloo & Associates (KRJDA), GEM was tasked with the design, manufacture, and installation of complex hardwood timber profiles to house the acoustic panelling across the auditorium’s curved ceiling. Due to the scale and sensitivity of the timber installation, GEM also designed and installed a temporary climate-controlled heating system during construction to protect the integrity of the materials. Key features included:

  • Custom hardwood timber structures designed to support acoustic panelling
  • Precision-manufactured timber profiles to meet complex curvature and performance criteria
  • Installation of a temporary heating system to maintain stable environmental conditions during construction
  • On-site coordination with multiple contractors to manage scheduling, access, and interface with structural and M&E works

Awards related to the CCD project include:

  • BREEAM Rating: “Very Good”
  • Best Conference & Events Venue, Events Industry Awards 2012
  • M&IT Gold Award, Best Overseas Conference Centre
  • World’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre – World Travel Awards 2017
