A Village Becomes a Town Following Major Redevelopment
Dundrum, a village in the southern part of Greater Dublin, has been redesignated a town following a major award-winning development.
The seventeen-acre site, which is centered around an eighteenth-century mill pond and mill house, was Ireland’s largest retail development, and formed an important part of the Strategic Plan for the Greater Dublin Area.
Careful Integration
The restoration of the mill pond and house formed part of the development, which was carried out with a view to retaining the integrity of the old village whilst at the same time providing the area with a prestigious modern retail park.
Central to the restoration is a 78,000 square metre shopping centre, consisting of three levels of shopping malls, and including an underground car park with spaces for more than three thousand cars – an essential requirement, as a large part of the new public realm and town centre has been pedestrianised. The shopping centre opens out onto the Dundrum Civic Square, and the redevelopment included the use of traditional stone cladding, marble flooring and complex and elaborate glazing.
Safety features include ICT/AV/Security systems, and the installation of Formica fire rated door sets, designed and fitted by the GEM Group’s award-winning joinery section.
